Fluency Disorder

People with fluency disorder may have difficulty expressing themselves fluently. Fluency disorders disrupt the speed, flow and rhythm of speech. People with dysfluency may frequently experience psychological, emotional and social problems due to verbal dysfluency.

Possible signs

  • Repetition of syllables, words or short phrases

  • Blocking of sounds, i.e. your speech may sound interrupted or blocked

  • Prolongation of syllables, words, short phrases 

  • Irregular speech rate

  • Slurring and mumbling speech

  • Frequent use of filler such as “um” or “uh” in conversations

  • Secondary behaviours such as pretending to cough or yawn to cover up stuttering, avoiding certain words that cause stuttering, rearranging words in sentences, etc.
